I cannot code my way out of a paper bag, unless it is the mid 90’s and it is coded in very basic HTML. I do however sadly use Claude because I do not currently have anything strong enough to run Ollama. I use a lot of open source things but feel guilty about not having money to pay for all the services I use so I like to think of it as a socialist type system; I have scripts to download and share the newest iso torrent’s of pi OS and Debian, I use CrowdSec to catch bots, and I now have my own crawler for mwmbl for searXNG. I don’t understand this. Not being able to afford products/services doesn’t mean that the sellers of those products/services are socialist. Maybe I don’t understand what you mean by “system”.
You exchange goods and services rather than money, sure it is more communist because there is not a government saying what the value of things are.

Socialism is the idea that the means of production are owned by everybody (by the society). It sounds like you’re saying you can’t afford to pay for something (in this kind-of-capitalist society) so you “like to think of it” as socialism, which you define as an exchange of goods and services rather than money, but you didn’t describe exchanging anything - you just describe taking something without paying for it.
I disagree with your definition of socialism, and with the idea that socialism (as I defined it) is good.
Update documentation, find bugs, provide repros. If there’s a project you care about, help support the community around it. Open source projects require a lottttt more than code to be successful and durable.
I’d suggest stop feeling bad. People put Free Software out there for other humans to make use of. You can take it and use it as you like.
Contributions are welcome. But it’s not some kind of tit-for-tat situation. Maybe you can contribute other things to society. Doesn’t have to be money or computer code…

All I can say Linux works perfectly well on my computer, wifi router… I’ve been using Free Software for most of my adult life. I’ve literally witnessed the internet work quite differently from what it’s become in the last 15 years… And we still have Free and independent services as of today. Independent forums, social media, video platforms, chat, mail… It’s a thing. It’s just up to the people to pick one of the matrix pills and either see what’s out there, or take the other one and believe in the non-socialist story.

(Just a rant) What I like least about FOSS projects are the project names that are hard to remember and hard to pronounce—and which often give no clue as to the often useful project’s function.

A few ideas from the top of my head: Git service ?: Radicle is a p2p distributed Git service. You can seed your fave projects.
Deeper search ?: Yacy is a mature/advanced distributed p2p search engine, but I don’t know how it compares to mwmble.
[AIT] (AI topic, tag rule for this sub) Inference service ?: AIhorde is a distributed p2p inference network where you can help out with a smaller machine/model and draw on the network when you need large models. Works with pics/txt. Not sure how its going though.
…Oh, and perhaps skip Claude - Anthropic et al. are Fscist Ucks, and for 90% of your projects, you get 90% the same quality for 90% reduced price elsewhere (claimed on a ‘trust me bro’ basis ;-) ). aihorde sounds like something for you and its self-hosted.
