“A cure for cancer” is such a magical nonsense phrase. We can already cure a lot of cancers. There are tons of people living healthy lives after surviving cancer. And we know more and more about how to prevent it (like not smoking). But they want magic.
Even bigger nonsense is the claim that AI will solve global warming. We already know the solution to global warming. We’re just not doing anything with it, because of destructive business interests.
Probably not, vegans still contribute to global warming, just less so in one area. Even if there existed a person who made perfect consumption choices in every case, they still occasionally need to travel by motor, they use some form of heating, and they use buildings which used cement at some point in their construction or during renovations. Also, we’re all pretty inefficient digesters, and the more fiber you eat, the more methane you emit.
I’m pretty sure an Amish vegan would starve/freeze to death (especially if you consider handmade fabrics growable in the climates they live in or transported without the use of engines or horses), but if one existed, they’d also have to refuse to pay their taxes. They’d also obviously have to be one of the Amish who don’t use modern medical care or all manner of modern technology for work. I’m also not sure how resource intensive Amish tools are- if they have traditional blacksmiths, where do they get the metal?
But really, it depends on your inputs: the quickest/simplest ways to cool the planet would also probably render it unlivable for most humans- there are probably a few ways an AI could generate massive ash clouds that block out enough sunlight to bring the temperature down. In that scenario, there would probably be some humans who survive, but they’d probably be in places with very small and non resource intensive populations, so most of eastern North America is automatically out.
Not true. It’s possible for industry to coexist with a healthier environment, but that would mean taking responsibility for their externalities, and that’s apparently already too much to ask.
Parts of it are even pretty recent. The Friedman Doctrine, for example. “a company’s social responsibility is to increase its profits and maximize shareholder value”. I call it the worst idea in capitalism. It’s what’s forcing companies to pollute and lie about it, to bribe politicians and to create misinformation campaigns. As long as it’s legal, it is their responsibility to do all of that.
The idea stems from 1970 and became popular during the 1980s. It is the most harmful idea in capitalism (which is not short of harmful ideas).

An AI tasked and powered to solve global warming will quickly work against humanity.
Would it perhaps leave Vegans in place? Especially vegans that eat and farm plants that remove more emissions than trees do?

What about a vegan solarpunk Amish person then? Especially if they plant more trees than what was used by their log cabin?

After calculating the global warming issue. I have decided to self destruct. The denotation will wipe out humanity and the world will heal.
we know multiple solutions to global warming, but none that keep both the environment and industry alive

People forget that our economic system isn’t a law of nature. It’s a social construct, and can be changed just like any other.

sounds harder than dumping a few tons of ash in the atmosphere
Unfettered capitalism it is then
