NB : It’s bad that japan does those kinds of things, not that it should also be acceptable for arab countries to do them too.

I regularly watch some YT shorts from this white girl living in Japan and she said she can’t hang her panties out to dry cause she’s on the ground floor and they get stolen easily. How can a society be so horny and yet have falling birthrates? 😅

    Define “get away with.”

Imagine if you heard that Japan cut off people heads for saying bad things about their king or that they still had slavery or that they were dropping bombs on their neighbors. They would never “get away” with that!

This might actually be the dumbest post I have seen on Lemmy yet.

Yeah Japan has uncomfortable cultural quirks at times, and they’ve gotten away with a fair bit in the whole “pretending they weren’t evil in the 30s-40s” sphere, but like they’re not doing that much in the extremely bad category at the moment beyond the yakuza (and organized crime is outside government control by definition).

If you want to know who can get away with real bad shit it’s Saudi Arabia and it’s because the us financially benefits from their regime

I mean, the middle east has the “At least 45 million people killed over oil” card, along with a whole lot of other shit that’s happened there. Not trying to downplay the bombings, but the middle east has been getting fucked with for a loooooong time.

No clue why Japan gets a pass on it. Although I do remember reading an article that said (I think) the UN was pressuring Japan to make some changes to their laws around pornography

All the stuff that the middle east have been trough its for their own culture, that’s the nail the US has always hanged to. The same will happen with Latam. You see what happened already with Venezuela, Mexico it’s next and we all are scared as fuck. Maybe, we, every country thratened by the US need vending machines with schoolgirl panties.

Because arab countries are looked down on for various reasons, but the general social conservative attitudes towards women are shared with korea and arab countries from a social perspective, and not a political perspective.

Like, they didn’t ban women from driving, but they still have ideas like “Christmas cake” (women are unwanted after they reach 25, since no one wants xmas cake after the 25th of dec [NB : I do not agree with this idea])

Not sure about comparing petty misogynist vs government mandated policy against woman based on religion.

You are suggesting that a social attitude that women should be married by 25 is equivalent to a country banning women from autonomy?

What do you think the reaction would be if the internet learned tomorrow that they sold used schoolgirl underwear in saudi arabia? how do you think the conservatives and news outlets would react?

Honestly, IDGAF. The posts topic aside, what Conservatives and MSM might think is NEVER the bar here. They have been on the wrong side of history since forever.

I’m sure many people would be offended, and many others wouldn’t care at all.

Personally, I think there are much more important things to get riled up about right now, and if I heard about this happening, is just think it’s weird and move on. But, of course, I’m sure others would feel differently depending on their situations.

I just don’t think it would be anything that people would be talking about for more than a few minutes.

Prefectures in Japan began enforcing regulations in 2004 that restricted purchases and sales of used underwear and saliva of people under 18.

Doesn’t really sound like they’re getting away with it

It also doesn’t seem to mention vending machines, but specialized shops or online selling. It’s still gross, but it’s also not unthinkable that this could happen in western countries. There was for instance an English internet personality who sold her used bath water a few years ago.

no doubt, but that was one person, not a pattern of behaviour by the masses

There is literally a picture of a vending machine in the article

True. But that picture is like those AI videos on youtube today where the thumbnail doesn’t show up in the video. According to this article, those vending machines were banned in 2004 and the trade in used panties was driven to specialized shops.

            Edit:

that was one person, not a pattern of behaviour by the masses Does this count?

But that picture is like those AI videos on youtube today where the thumbnail doesn’t show up in the video.

It’s wikipedia. The photo is from 2009, and it’s uploaded 2015. It’s a real thing, it isn’t AI, not everything is fake news, things happen.

              Does this count?

              That’s not bathwater, it’s panties.

At this point you should just tell us what message you’re trying to convey, and then we can simply say “you’re right” and be done with it.
