Mint might be easier to recommended in their next major release, but being stuck on x11 when all the optimisations are being made for Wayland (not to mention features a lot of new users might expect like HDR and fractional scaling). They’ve also recently had a problem with shipping outdated packages and leaving the repo/support links as is, leading to users reporting bugs which were fixed months or even up to a year ago.
They’re working on all of that to their credit, and their next release should fix most of those problems, but I’m hesitant to recommended Mint right now
NixOS - it’s for a very specific type of masochist, but god damn having my whole OS be infrastructure as code and in a git repo is cool to me

That was my first thought too, but I can’t really tell why, the display connector appears to be locked in place fine. It could just be a crappy design though because that cable runs through the heatsink, and the connector is partially blocked by one of the heat pipes so possibly thermal damage to the wire or connector?
Even just trying to re-seat the connector would require removing the entire heatsink/fan assembly which is very annoying. It’s not beyond my ability, but I asked the question about running it as a server to avoid that hassle lol, I’d much rather tinker with software than hardware it seems

Back before my nan was moved into permanent care for her dementia, she kept falling victim to these mail order scams. Heaps and heaps of junk mail would land on her doormat every day offering real products that were often delivered, but were either awful quality dropshipped crap (clothes or plastic junk) or something she could buy in the corner shop down the road for 10% of the price (one that stands out that I remember is a pack of 4 mini apple tarts that cost like £29.99)
Of course the more she bought, the more junk mail she got, and I remember my dad bringing home multiple bin bags of these letters every week that he had confiscated from her before she could mail them back. Her kitchen counters were piled up with these forms every time we visited and it was so difficult to get rid of them because she would get angry if anyone “stole her post”.

I’ve always been confused why Breakthrough Starshot always showed the square km laser array on the ground instead of a bunch of satellites in orbit. That way you wouldn’t have to account for atmospheric attenuation of the lasers PLUS you could probably get military funding for putting a gigawatt of laser capacity in orbit lmao.
Like sure, the likes of Starlink were still just getting going when Breakthrough Starshot was conceptualised, so the idea of a large satellite constellation probably wasn’t on their radar yet, but at the same time - they were talking about sending thousands of probes to Proxima Centauri so it’s a mystery to me why they didn’t see that kind of technological progress being possible by the time we were doing that
In terms of security, it’s definitely best to use either zigbee or thread bulbs with a dedicated dongle plugged directly into your HA server (never use the manufacturer’s hub). That way, they can only communicate with your HA directly, and there’s no way for them to access the internet surreptitiously.
I highly recommended the Sonoff dongles, I’m using the MG24 for my thread devices and an older model for my zigbee ones and they’ve been rock solid. Just make sure to use a USB extension cable to plug them in as your USB ports can generate electrical interference - do not ignore this advice! I did at first and it caused me problems. (Iirc the MG24 actually comes with one in the box)
Something else to note is that you can’t use the same dongle for both ZigBee and Thread at the same time, they each need to be flashed with the respective firmware for the protocol you want to use.
Tesseract was a web frontend for Lemmy that was used as the default for a few big instances when you visited them in your browser.
It was discovered that the frontend had a built-in hidden blocklist of instances and users that the developer deemed to be “toxic” despite the instances on the list being some very normal mainstream ones and the list of users being so large, a significant proportion of active posters/commenters were on it.
Users of tesseract were not told the list existed, admins/moderators could not disable it. It would just silently hide everything matching the filter without the user being any the wiser that they were missing content.
People were obviously angry about this and the developer, instead of apologising for how they handled things, doubled down, got clowned on by practically everyone and ragequit the platform.
Who woulda thunk a community that prides itself on user choice would be mad when someone else forces their choices onto said users…
So I actually have a setup similar to this, but with a mini pc (m.2 to 6x sata adapter, each one connected to a 4tb ssd - well eventually, only 2 are populated currently) and I did use a dremmel to cut through the metal top of the case and it was still a horrible sharp mess, even after I tried sanding it down. I ended up 3d printing a custom i/o shield to stop my cables (or fingers) getting sliced on it and that actually works really well!
