Check out libera.chat, one of the most popular IRC networks today. Freenode suffered a hostile takeover and there was a mass migration away from it so I’d avoid that one

I think a big thing that made it catch on was the ease of joining. Just send someone a link and boom, they’re in the intended server. No immediate registration process, no buttons or commands to use, just a single click and entering a username. For all that I dislike Discord about, they did that part really well

Appreciate the info, thanks for taking the time to reply. I loved when Google was using XMPP for their chat just because that meant I could chat with people who insisted on using their Google accounts, without having to use one myself

I really want to love Matrix but man, it just feels janky. And this is from someone who likes IRC and XMPP. I can’t put my finger on why Matrix just doesn’t feel great, that’s the most frustrating part. Might be solvable with a decent client. I don’t like Element. Quaternion seems nice and simple but keeps crashing on me, and I don’t think it handles voice

I’d miss the history in my family server, but we’d get over it. If I can convince everyone else to move

I love IRC, just need some user friendly client recommendations if we want wider adoption by less tech savvy folks. Though I get the impression there are a good few IRC users who prefer how that filters out the “normies”

Sounds like everyone and their dog trying to sign up at once due to this Discord news is overwhelming them, give it a while and try again later. I’m waiting a bit before I try. im_doing_my_part.jpg

Yeah … A complete anything-goes free for all is always going to devolve into a nasty cesspool dominated by the worst actors who have driven everyone else away. I get it, there’s a lot of awful censorship out there, but on the flip side you need to have at least some rules to prevent the otherwise inevitable descent into the worst environment possible

I’m still trying to understand why XMPP isn’t more widely used. Probably the whole no single centralized service thing like most other federated protocols/services

Sounds like some wild folks.
After pondering it for about ten minutes I’m pretty sure I was introduced to YTMND by someone posting https://darthno.ytmnd.com/ in response to something in a forum I was on. I’ve had that URL memorized ever since and use it every now and then for similar dramatic responses of my own

I bet you have some cool talents even if they don’t drive you to forums

I love me a paperback book that can fit in a pocket

This is the way to do it

I’ve had to put .htaccess passwords on a bunch of my pages just to try and keep the spambots and AI scrapers at bay. This world, man

Man, I loved YTMND back in the day. I can’t for the life of me remember how I first heard about it

I’ve been seeing a lot about this stuff and I really want to get into it, seems really cool

Set up your own website if you haven’t already, the indie web/smallnet/etc movement lately has been really cool to see and has made the internet fun again for me. Neocities is a great place to start if you need simple hosting, completely free and without ads

This is what I do, along with ‘okay, unlock your phone and hand it to me’. Less often the second because if someone complied I would really not want to actually go through all their personal stuff, feels gross
Can’t wait til they’re blasted and shredded
