The power of AI.

Long story short, AI initially pushed back on the ridiculous idea that drinking your own piss was a cure all, then these users figured out that adding words like ‘esoteric’ to their prompts let them direct AI to tell them what they wanted to hear.

Tbh article was too gross for me to finish. That’s all you get from me for a summary.

It’s not actually sterile. It’s an old myth. It’s actually, just like any other bodily fluid, full of bacteria.

If it’s fresh then the bacteria haven’t grown to dangerous levels, unless you have an infection.

That doesn’t mean you should drink it, of course. But bacteria doesn’t always mean bad.

The most dangerous part of fresh urine is the uric acid, which can cause kidney stones if it’s allowed to build up (i.e., by drinking it over time)

If you visit the dentist, then (in the UK) you are not meant to donate blood for the next two weeks.

Any trauma in the mouth from the dentistry will allow mouth bacteria into your bloodstream, and whilst it’ll be okay for you a weaker person may not do well from the subsequent transfusion.

Our immune system isn’t that efficient. There’s always at least some bacteria in there. Just not enough to kill us, most of the time.

That doesn’t sound right. We’d be perpetually bacteremic if that were the case.

Seems there’s a paper on this (doi 10.1038/s41564-023-01350-w) that showed that 84% of people don’t have bacteria in their blood. Authors hypothesized based on the detected bacteria that the remaining 16% were likely temporary colonizations and not permanent.

So for the most part, blood appears to be sterile with some possibility of temporary low level bacteremia

Yes blood is a fluid from the body and bloodborne illness are absolutely a thing.

Though “sterile” isn’t really a decision factor in food. Otherwise we’d eat examination gloves and drink bleach 😅

As others have said, not sterile. Even if it was, though, sterile doesn’t mean safe to consume.

It’s like eating your own feces, it’s what the body worked hard to remove from you because, surprise, it’s bad.

Don’t drink your own pee. Don’t drink anyones pee. I mean a little if you’re sexually into that, but don’t overdo it!

It’s not sterile. What’s in there just doesn’t grow if you simply put it on petri dishes, similarily to the gut biome or the bacteria in your stomach. They are adapted to an specific low-oxygen environment. Which means when you drink your piss, all bets are off, because the bacteria in it might like your stomach or gut, even when not growing on an agar plate.

This is also the reason why research in things like Heliobacter pylorii (a chronic stomach bug, causing all kinds of cell damage there) are so complicated: you have to use a bioreactor tuned to the specific conditions of the human stomach to even grow it, and research also has to take place in these, with very aggressive conditions compared to “in the open under the fume hood”
