I’ve tried… 3 or 4? All were from people I know who I told “Well, I didn’t like X brand, but if there’s a substantially different one I’ll try it again” and it hasn’t ended with a tequila I like xD I just think tequila isn’t for me
I do like smokey flavors in drinks but the tequilas blancas are not smokey, they have a vaguely vegetal flavor. Also for any tequila : Try with some agave & lime & water or soda water, make a tequila-ade and see if you like it better as an ingredient. I don’t love it straight, too strong but love love love it in a cocktail.
Part of what they’re saying is tequilas aren’t smokey. A good tequila is made with steamed blue agave. Mezcal is often made with roasted agave that gives it a smokey flavor, although this isn’t a requirement for it. Tequila is technically a mezcal (not all mezcal is tequila), with a more specific definition that should usually mean it’s pretty much never smokey.
