Chick-fil-A is turning down artificial intelligence in its drive-thru lanes, choosing human employee interaction over automated order takers as competitors embrace voice technology.
I have once or twice. I tried to get something removed from the order and it just kept asking, “What else would you like to add?” and “Will that complete your order?” as I’m aggressively telling it to change something. Human took over from there. I mean, if AI can’t even get something as simple as “can you remove X from the food?” then it definitely explains why most people choose to cut in instead.
My family got stuck with one. It couldn’t get the order right, kept doubling an item. Finally my kid asked for 10,000 waters and that caused the human to get tagged in.
I got somewhat forced into one at a Rally’s the other day when I was in a rush and couldn’t be bothered to go somewhere else. It was a terrible experience, both because of the AI and because the food was just awful.
The burrito place near me tried doing an AI ordering thing for their phone service, but I never could get it to work. I told them that it didn’t work, and they gave me the magic words to skip to a human.
I still have yet to actually order with an AI system. Plenty of restaurants around me have them, but an employee always cuts in before I can order.
