All I want is a small, cheap phone with a good camera, ability to listen to audiobooks and podcasts and be able to check things from the web. Things like Wikipedia, bus schedules and other text heavy things.

This is not cheap and can’t browse the web so it’s just not worth it.

Don’t take your phone with you. Put your sensitive information and credentials into Bitwarden. Buy a cheap smartphone from the U.S., install Bitwarden and use it. When leaving, log out of Bitwarden, delete the app, reset the phone and leave it behind.

You don’t need an amazing rig to do this. Don’t get fooled by the content creators with their sponsored content. Learn and buy only after researching what you need. Build for your own needs not to some crazy spec someone on the YouTube tells you need. A simple old pc with right software and working backup solution is all you really need. Just learn how to make it work safely.
