PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•The people have spoken: Motion blur is the worstEnglish
3·4 days agoYeah, in quite a few cases (especially a particular generation of console games in which motion blur can’t be disabled) it is covering for something. Some effects like TAA work great if the camera doesn’t whip around quickly, but can leave some “ghosting” if the camera moves too fast. So motion blur makes the ghosting less visible. Film grain is another one that is sometimes used to hide noise in dynamic light reflections and the like. I’m of the opinion that they look like ass but in some games they do look better than what they’re covering up.

Yeah, I wanna be the vapor gets you high
Yeah, I wanna feel so happy that I cry

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why is the US currently obsessed with protein?English
5·2 months agoit really depends on the athlete - for an endurance athlete in particular, you don’t need a crazy amount of protein. Dancers/gymnasts too or really any sport more reliant on cardiovascular endurance or coordination than maximal strength or power.
bodybuilders/powerlifters are on the far other end of that spectrum, they probably have the highest demand for protein intake out of any athlete. The general consensus is the muscle-building benefits of more protein flatten out around 0.8g protein per 1lb body weight. so about 120g of protein for someone who weighs 150lb. You can definitely eat more or less without issue, that’s just roughly the threshold where more protein doesn’t seem to help you athletically.
The nutritional guidelines under RFK’s administration were changed to recommend 1.2-1.6g protein/lb of body weight for EVERY American, which is fucking ridiculous. It is fine to eat the high end of that range, but you have to be very careful to get enough carbs and fats without introducing too much caloric surplus. There is a valid argument that protein tends to keep you satiated longer and eating a lot of it might be good if you’re looking to lose weight. I don’t think it’s a great idea for everyone though, and most Americans get enough protein for their basic needs anyhow.
but you know what’s even better at keeping you satiated that most Americans are actually super deficient in? that’s right fuckin FIBER baby. Protein is just in fashion right now, especially among conservatives, many of whom are meeting this through red meat probably because they think lentils are icky and woke. and we’re god awful at health education so various nutrients get touted as THE THING YOUR BODY DESPERATELY CRAVES or THE THING THAT IS LITERALLY KILLING YOU on a rotating basis. e.g. electrolytes, carbs respectively.
(I can get more specific academic references for the earlier points, but I encountered much of it in Eric Helms’ The Muscle and Strength Pyramid books, which line up with opinions of other credible trainers I’ve encountered. those books are also just a great read on this topic)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you ever just sit and listen to music, or do you have to be doing something else at the same time?English
1·6 months agoI listen to a lot of music while I’m doing things as background, but when I get a moment for it focused listening is a great experience. I don’t listen to the same type of music for both, though there’s definitely some overlap. But I’m not listening to funeral doom at work or Lightning Bolt sitting in bed before I go to sleep. I think both experiences are equally valid ways to enjoy and appreciate music.
The gym has given me an interesting middle ground as it is something that requires some planning and thinking at times, but at some point my body knows the movements well enough to do it more or less on its own. So the music I listen to ends up being the most diverse. It can either fade into the background while I’m setting up, making notes, etc. or be the main thing I’m focusing on toward the last reps of a movement I know well.

Danganronpa. (the games, not the anime) It’s hard to defend in some places, with its abysmal minigames, nonsensical plot, and anime tropey story that gets very uncomfortable and insensitive at times. I am also of the opinion that to be cringe is to be free, but it’s one of those franchises with an online fanbase that turned me off of the entire thing for a long while.
But, when I was encouraged to actually give it a fair shake, I enjoyed it a lot. At its best moments, there’s some solid murder mysteries surrounded with entertaining characters and a tense atmosphere. Camp doesn’t excuse the worst parts, but it definitely makes them suck a little less.
The third game in particular gets a lot of flack for its ending and I get it, it’s not a very satisfying conclusion for the characters or universe and a little up its own ass. But as a reflection on the franchise, I do see what they were doing and thought it was interesting - probably more interesting than if we got actual answers for the worldbuilding questions it bypasses.
Definitely skip the anime covering the first game’s events, it’s way too compressed and just heinously awful in a lot of ways. Can’t speak for the other anime series, the movie, or the books, though I’m still interested enough to give em a try sometime.
