As for why this is necessary at Oktoberfest specifically:
The Teufelsrad is one of the oldest attractions at the Oktoberfest, the annual beer festival which comes to an end this weekend after 16 days. Its circular platform rotates faster and faster until its riders fall off, and the motion and speed often make skirts fly up.
Sounds like a very reasonable “fix”, equating filming people spinning on a table to upskirting a waitress serving someone is a bit weird
While I do agree, there’s apparently a certain breed of ‘content creators’ that specifically film and upload women at the Oktoberfest, explicitly for sexualization.
Yes, there are public places where people commonly become undressed like the beach or the Teufelsrad. But no, you should not just film strangers und upload them for monetary gain.Still it’s not exactly upskirting filming from where everyone is watching…
it sounds like some people film this intentionally to upskirt
thousands of voyeuristic videos emerged on social media.
Some videos showing women on the Teufelsrad, or Devil’s Wheel, have been viewed millions of times. One is said to have made thousands of euros for a woman who posted it online.
Like those creepy bull riding machines where they say you can get a free drink if you last 90 seconds, and then the operator spends that whole time trying to make their tops fall down and skirts ride up, before flinging them off with three seconds left. I suspect “spinning ride which lifts women’s skirts” is probably at least part of the point.
Good point, but it makes the headline much easier to write at the very least.
Nice to see some facts on this. I think it’s a fair workaround. We were in Europe recently and my wife had to cover her shoulders with a scarf in the churches. You know, so that God wouldn’t be aroused by her bare naked shoulder.
All (jokes) aside, high speed rides and some modesty clothing is simply going to allow more riders and increase profit. Its all about profit.
But was there an option? I’m sure there has to be some kinky woman who love to show off
You are disgusting
Careful clutching those pearls so hard
OP: There are probably people who enjoy showing off their bodies. Lots of people are into an infinite about of things.
You, a fucking dipshit:
And you are unrealistic
yeah, let’s pretend people don’t post their bodies on social media for attention
Gonewild exists
Nah just open-minded, and not too Nazis

Everyone knows this about the Devil’s Wheel. Good idea to give out shorts, especially considering that people have been filming it. But “upskirting” idk
There’s a pretty big difference between riding a ride that some people have heard makes skirts fly up and consenting to your upskirt getting posted to the Internet.
Yeah exactly. These people are so immoral, how do they not realise that filming it and posting it is massively invasive and completely wrong; now they’ve ruined it for everyone
They realise. They just don’t care.
Well until today I didn’t know that there was anyone filming Teufelsräder specifically to look up skirts, and would’ve thought nothing of watching a video. I’ve seen videos of them on YouTube before without thinking it was wrong. So I think that’s how - it didn’t strike me as invasive to film it, either, and given that it’s an event taking place in public I still don’t think “invasive” is the right description.
To me the difference is whether you’re declaring that you’re thinking about people sexually (or encouraging others to do the same) in an explicit way, which goes beyond filming and uploading it.
I think filming, photographing, purely strangers in public is on its way out of acceptability. Probably mainly due to feasibility of distribution… but it’s also just a bit creepy
I don’t think that’s really true, at least not at that level of generality. At events, it’s pretty much ubiquitous that someone from the event will be taking photographs to go on social media or whatever. There is no backlash against photojournalists taking pictures of crowds. Obviously you’d expect both of those professionals to behave according to professional standards, so neither category necessarily has anything to do with the original situation of taking photos of strangers for sexual gratification, but it’s something you need to square with your latest comment, I suppose.
“Normal weird, or German weird?”
What a nutty article. I have, questions…
There was a good podcast episode from 11km recently, sorry to say it is in German language. Basically they made an investigative story about people from foreign countries that film and sell these videos, that are used for pushing YouTube accounts. Sounds crazy, I know, but they specifically did research in this Teufalsrad attraction.
It’s fucking ridiculous that this has to be a thing. I would LOVE to go just a week- ONE WEEK… without being embarrassed by my own gender.
Men, do better.

Don’t they put the shorts under the skirt anyway?
Oh, good. The women who were forced to get on a ride in dresses, famous for raising their dresses. now can have shorts, because they couldn’t before.
You could also just make it very clear that disgusting men who sexually assault women will face consequences and follow through on that promise. I guess that’s just too much to ask. Not all men indeed…🙄
You boys are always so pissy lol
They do.
Filming under skirts is illegal in Germany, and carries a two-year sentence in jail. […] The Teufelsrad tent is hung with signs and police posters in German and English warning against filming under people’s skirts, but Polaczy[, the woman handing out shorts,] says it is impossible to control everyone filming with smart phones.
Tbf it’s still really frustrating that people can’t help but target women in this way no matter how many warnings or punishment or altering of behavior there may be.
Yeah? Do they follow through on that? cuz that’s the important part.
Why are you always defending stupid shit lol it’s always you
I mean, from the same article I have to keep reading on your behalf:
This year, police arrested a 45-year-old Swiss man for using his phone to film under a German woman’s dirndl. Last year there were 10 arrests for upskirting and seven in 2024.
I don’t think I can compile enough statistics on the niche crimonology of “people who take upskirt shots at Oktoberfest” to satisfy “do they follow through on that?” – nebulous enough that the goalposts could be anywhere, especially for someone who can’t be bothered with the bare minimum effort to inform themselves on the topic – but it’s enough that I hope you’ll consider researching the topic further if you want to justify being this obnoxious.
Why are you always defending stupid shit lol it’s always you
I don’t know what you’re talking about – specifically or generally.
In this case, I just read the article, came to the comments, read the things you said, and remembered parts of the article that contradict it.
Defensive much? Hit a little too close to home, huh?
the fuck are you trying to say?
